Carl’s Cabins is friendly spot for our guests to hang out, meet new friends, tell stories, have a warm spot to rest after a big hunt, or just relax during a visit to Hettinger. We are a boutique motel in Hettinger, North Dakota with roots dating back to 1936 when the property was developed by Carl Austad.

Mr. Austad built Carl’s Service Station and Tourist Cabins to be one of the finest lodges in the northwest. His accommodations were a hit and widely touted as a home away from home on the way to Yellowstone via highway 12. Everyone was welcomed and no one was a stranger.

In 2021, we started to revive Carl’s Cabins and Carl’s vision of making a premiere motel in the area. We made plans, restored as much of the original buildings and hardware as we could and added modern conveniences like big showers, internet, premium streaming, and cozy electric fireplaces. We took Carl’s Cabins back to the good old days but with a mix of modern amenities!

Take a step back in time

From its beginning in 1936, Carl’s Cabins was one of the finest service stations and tourist cabins -- it was the premier place to stay in Hettinger. With four original buildings still standing, we decided to revive the spirit of the most charming cabins in Hettinger. Newly renovated and conveniently situated, we can once again boast Carl’s Cabins is the premier place to stay in Hettinger.

Carl’s Cabins is within walking distance to restaurants, local bars, coffee shop, grocery and convenience stores, and the Hettinger Theatre.  We're just minutes away from the Dakota Buttes Museum, the Enchanted Highway, Mirror Lake, historical sites, six public parks, a golf course, the Hettinger airport, and some of the best hunting and fishing, bird watching in Southwest North Dakota.

Enjoy Holidays and Calendar Events, Family Gatherings, Business Meetings, Hunting Trips, Romantic Get-Aways, or stop here on your way to some of our best national parks like Yellowstone, The Grand Tetons, and Glacier National Park.
